Statement of Purpose
My decision to continue my study in Civil Engineering base on my life experience. First, I did my thesis research about “concrete tile with palm fiber” for my undergraduate program. Second, I got invitation from my supervisor to present my thesis research in national conference in Civil Engineering in my country. Third, my family run a steel fabricator company in Indonesia. Thus, my goal at George Mason’s Department of Civil Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (CEIE) is to conduct a qualitative study of construction project, including construction management, structural, and geotechnical.
My interest in civil engineering started when I began my undergraduate study in civil engineering, I had the opportunity to deliver my hobby in material and building. I have also had the opportunity to do some research regarding my study in civil engineering. It was very interesting and enjoyable moment for me because I could learn new and different perspective of civil engineering in the world. My interest in civil engineering increase when my professor ask me to help him on his concrete research in laboratory. I decided to help him because I was very excited in research and also I can use the result for my thesis. Finally, I developed a concrete tile mixed with palm fiber to increase the flexural strength of the tile, so I can reduce the volume of cement and produced less CO2. I was very interested in research which connected to world condition and help to solve problem in the world.
After I graduated and earned an A on my thesis, my supervisor asked me to represent him on national conference of civil engineering in my country. It was civil engineering conference attended by top university in Indonesia and international public speaker. At this time, I had opportunity to represent my supervisor on important conference. My supervisor was the director of research in my university at that time. In two days of conference, I met with many scholar and professional in civil engineering and I was impressed with them because of their knowledge and dedication to construction development and world condition. At that moment I realized that civil engineering is very wide and there are many interesting subject to developed. Start from that moment, I decided to become one of professional in civil engineering because I want to participate in saving the world.
My family run a construction company since 1994, started from personal house project and changed into steel fabricator in 2002, focusing on warehouse and factory for industrial developer until now. When I was a kid, my father brought me to our steel fabricator really often, I grew up not far from steel construction. I help my family business since I was undergraduate until I came here to continue my study. I learned many practical applications, especially in steel construction. I was the only child in my family, failure is not an option.
As a result of my personal experience, I am confident I can success and give contribution to the faculty in your department. My plans following completion of my current studies are taking a doctoral programs in civil engineering or professional engineering, and I would like to contribute in construction technology development before I go back to my country. I believe I can make the greatest contribution, utilizing my theoretical background and creativity as an expert in my field.
